Canada's Origins in Beaver Trapping

Beaver trapping was essentially the engine that built Canada. Starting in the early 1600s, European demand for beaver pelts — particularly for felt hats that were fashionable at the time — drove massive exploration and colonization of North America. The Hudson's Bay Company (founded 1670) became one of the most powerful trading enterprises in history, and Indigenous peoples were central partners in the trade, exchanging furs for European goods.

 

The fur trade shaped Canada's geography, alliances, and economy for over 200 years, pushing explorers deeper into the continent and establishing trade routes that became the foundation of modern cities like Montreal, Winnipeg, and Edmonton.

Why Does Trapping Still Matters Today?

  • Rabies — Found in foxes, raccoons, skunks, and bats across Canada. Managing population densities helps slow the spread of this fatal virus.
  • Mange (Sarcoptic Mange) — A highly contagious skin disease caused by mites, commonly affecting foxes, coyotes, and wolves. Overpopulated areas see higher transmission rates.

Why is Fur Sustainable?

Natural fur is a renewable, biodegradable resource. Unlike synthetic alternatives made from petroleum-based plastics, real fur breaks down naturally at the end of its life without leaving microplastics in the environment. When sourced from regulated trappers — as with locally trapped hides — it is part of a wildlife management system that helps maintain healthy, balanced animal populations. Nothing goes to waste; hides that would otherwise be discarded are given new purpose.

How Does Fur Work as an Insulator?

Fur is one of nature’s most effective insulators. The dense, fine underfur fibers trap warm air close to the body, creating a natural thermal barrier against cold temperatures. The longer, coarser guard hairs on top repel moisture, wind, and snow, keeping the warmth locked in. As a hat, fur naturally conforms to the shape of the head minimizing heat loss — which is critical since a significant amount of body heat is lost through the head. Unlike synthetic materials, fur breathes, regulating temperature without causing overheating.
